Buying an EV is only half of the story.

Buying an EV is only half of the story.

6.44 Million. That is the number of registered EV’s in India as of July 2025. And among the rising number of EV users in the world’s most promising automotive segment, home EV charging is the most common means of charging. If talking strictly in numbers, there are 10X more private chargers than public chargers worldwide. But, even with a rising preference of home EV charging, every 9 out of 10 first-time EV buyers make the rookie mistake of considering their EV chargers as an afterthought on their EV journey.

Out of this, a significant portion only seek out a charger after realizing the limitations of the bundled Level 1 EV charger. This is surprising, as experts to a large degree champion the fact, that your EV experience will be as smooth as the charger that powers it.

So, why is the EV charger an afterthought for so many? What should first-time EV buyers do? What are the benefits of considering an EV charger beforehand?

For the answers, please read the blog further.

Home EV chargers are important for your charging experience.

For most EV owners, home charging is the default habit not some exception. In this scenario, and unlike traditional fuel stations and internal combustion engines, your home becomes your charging station. That means every night while you sleep at home, your vehicle charges and prepares for the next day. The idea is simple and convenient. However, this convenience only works if you have the right charger.

A standard wall socket might seem like an easy fix at first for first time buyers, but it often leads to painfully slow charging, inefficient energy use, and safety concerns with your home and your EV’s battery. In contrast, an educated EV buyer understands that a dedicated home EV charger brings speed, safety, and smart features like scheduled charging and solar integration.

With such substantial differences, having a well-planned home charging setup is a the foundation of your EV experience. And yet, it’s the one piece of the puzzle most first-time buyers overlook.

So why do most first-time EV buyers consider home ev chargers as an afterthought?

Why is home EV charging an afterthought for many?

Bundled chargers create false comfort for EV users. Nearly all new EVs come with a basic Level 1 charger which is adequate but slow for everyday use. Many first time EV buyers initially assume the included charger is enough, but after experiencing long overnight charges and inconvenience in the form of lack of remote control and real-time monitoring, they realize a more powerful Level 2 charger is needed. For some, the effort of installing required for a proper home charger and potentially upgrading home electrical infrastructure for the same, comes as a surprise later in ownership.

Taking a corollary from this, many users, especially in apartments or shared buildings, face significant barriers around permissions, wiring upgrades, and accessible electric points. These logistical hurdles and frictions lead to the common mindset: “Buy the EV first, then deal with the charger later.” Cognitive psychologists call this temporal discounting. This postponement is well documented in consumer feedback and industry reports.

Speaking purely from an EV user mindset, most consumers approach an EV purchase with a traditional vehicle mindset, and focus on range, price, and features, rather than consider the entire technology ecosystem, that includes home EV charging and connectivity. As per Escalent, nearly half of new-car buyers have never heard of ‘Level 1’ or "Level 2" EV chargers, and another quarter has only a basic understanding.

With such staggering numbers, it is very evident as to why the thought process and discussion about home EV charging does not get the prominence and respect it deserves; as one would respect a tiger or a hurricane.

This leads to a very obvious question: what are the benefits of considering home EV charging beforehand?

There are 6 benefits of considering home EV charging in advance.

1. Battery Health and longevity: You're prolonging the life of your EV

Battery lifespan is influenced by how and how often you charge. DC fast charging is a powerful tool for convenience and flexibility, especially during long trips or urgent needs. However, for daily use, slower Level 2 home charging offers a consistent power supply in a controlled environment that supports better long-term battery health.

2. Reduced Range Anxiety

Having a home charger ensures a full "tank" every morning and reduces EV charging time anxiety. A study by recurrent auto reveals that most EV owners with home charging report very low range anxiety compared to those relying on public stations.

3. Be Ready from Day 1

Being set up at home right away avoids initial frustrations with slow charging and gives new owners a seamless start up experience from Day 1. Customers who have home chargers report higher satisfaction scores (735 to 744 out of 1,000) and fewer frustrations compared to those reliant on slower or public options.

4. Mental Readiness

Transitioning your mindset from ‘fill at a station’ to ‘top up at home’ happens the fastest when you start with a home charger. An article by EV magazine in 2023 points out that residential charging is where the mindset shifts mostly start. It prepares users to think differently about vehicle energy use and in tandem make them adopt new habits with ease.

5. Avoid post-purchase extra costs

Planning in advance helps optimize installation and avoid extra costs from EV post-purchase electrical work. Choosing the right spot often in the garage or driveway near your usual parking place, ensures easy, hassle-free daily charging. Additionally, proximity to your car’s charging port minimizes the need for long cables and avoids tripping hazards, while placing the charger close to your home electrical panel reduces installation complexity and costs.

6. Better Pricing and offers

Many automakers or utilities offer discounts for pre-ordering or bundling home installation with the vehicle purchase. Some companies even provide free professional installation on chargers. Out of these, many installations also take advantage of government subsidies and incentives that greatly reduce upfront costs.

Here’s a summary table for ready reference:

BUYING A HOME EV CHARGER IN ADVANCE IS NECESSARY

We don’t just buy EVs to get from A to B and no transformation ever succeeds on hope alone. It needs infrastructure, planning, foresight, and above all, respect for the unnoticed systems that shape it. The EV charger, as mundane as it may seem, is not just a tool. To overlook it is to forget that the small decisions we make in our daily routine. And choosing it in advance is to bring the future of mobility to home in the best way possible.
